The formula

How to calculate total revenue

Three steps, whether you sell one product or fifty.

01

Find each price

The price of one unit: a product, an hour, a subscription. Use what you charged, not your list price.

02

Count what you sold

How many of each you sold in the period: units, hours or contracts.

03

Multiply, then add

Multiply each price by its quantity. Add the results together, and that's total revenue.

One product

Total revenue = Price × Quantity

Sell 1,000 units at $50 each: $50 × 1,000 = $50,000.

Several products

(P₁ × Q₁) + (P₂ × Q₂) + …

The sample month in the calculator: ($140 × 1,975) + ($1,400 × 86) + ($100 × 491) = $446,000.

In your books

Find total revenue on your profit and loss

It's the first total on the P&L, before any costs come off. Your accounting system may call it total income or total sales.

  • Every sale in the period counts, from every customer.
  • Sales tax you collect isn't part of it. Neither is a loan.
  • Costs come after it, so gross profit is the next line down.

FAQ

Total revenue questions

What people ask about total revenue, and how to find it.

It's all the money your business brings in from sales in a period, before any costs come off. On a profit and loss, it's the top line. It's also called total sales or gross revenue.
Total revenue = price × quantity. For more than one product, work out price × quantity for each one, then add them up.
Multiply each product's price by the number you sold, then add the results. Sell 1,975 hours at $140 and 86 retainers at $1,400, and total revenue is $276,500 + $120,400 = $396,900.
It's the first total, at the top. Look for total income, total sales or total revenue, above cost of sales. Or ask Claude or ChatGPT, and it reads the figure from your books.
Usually, yes. Both mean everything you sold before any deductions. Net revenue is what's left after returns, discounts and allowances.
Net revenue takes returns, discounts and allowances off total revenue. Sell $100,000 and refund $4,000, and total revenue is $100,000. Net revenue is $96,000.
Total revenue is what you sold. Profit is what's left after costs. Gross profit takes off the cost of what you sold, and net profit takes off every cost. To work out gross profit and margin, try the gross margin calculator.
No. Sales tax you collect belongs to the tax authority, so it isn't revenue. Neither is a loan, or cash an owner puts into the business.
It's what one more sale adds to total revenue. Marginal revenue = change in total revenue ÷ change in quantity. If one more $50 sale takes revenue from $50,000 to $50,050, marginal revenue is $50.
It's total revenue divided by the number of units sold. When every unit sells at the same price, average revenue is that price.
Economists draw it as a curve. At each price on the demand curve, total revenue is that price times the quantity people buy. It peaks where marginal revenue falls to zero.
Yes, once it can see your books. On its own, it only knows the figures you type. Connected through Kipper, it reads your real revenue from QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite, read-only, by month, customer or category.
