Xero MCP Connector

Xero MCP Connector, without the developer setup.

A Xero MCP connector links AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini to your Xero data, so you can ask questions in plain English and get answers from real records. Instead of running the official Xero MCP server yourself, Kipper is a hosted connector built for finance and ops teams: no code, no Xero Developer app, and read-only by architecture. Connect one organisation, then ask about invoices, payments, bills, purchase orders, inventory, or credit notes.

The Kipper MCP beta is opening now. Join the list and connect Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini the moment your access is live.

The short answer

Is there an MCP server for Xero?

Yes. There are two main routes. Xero publishes an official open-source MCP server on GitHub, which a developer runs locally with a Xero Developer app, Custom Connection credentials, and a Node.js build. Hosted options like Kipper skip the setup entirely: you authorize one Xero organisation in a web portal, add one MCP connection to your AI assistant, and every answer is scoped by permissions and logged. Which one fits depends on whether a developer or a finance team is doing the connecting.

The problem

Your AI is smart. It just can't see your books.

Ask Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini about your finances today and you get one of two things: a guess, or a request to paste in a report. Exports go stale the moment you download them, the AI only sees the slice you pasted, and sensitive numbers end up sitting in a chat history.

The official fix — running Xero's MCP server yourself — means a developer, a Xero Developer app and Custom Connection, and a local process someone has to babysit. Kipper closes the gap with one hosted, read-only connection: your AI sees your real Xero records, scoped to exactly what each person is allowed to ask about.

How it works

Connected and running in under an hour.

01

Connect your Xero organisation

An admin authorizes Kipper from the admin portal. Initial sync ~10 minutes.

02

Set permissions

Full visibility, receivables only, or custom scope per user, team, or channel. Unsupported data stays outside the boundary before the AI sees anything.

03

Add the Kipper MCP connector to your AI assistant

One connection in Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini. No Xero Developer app, no Custom Connection secrets, no local server.

04

Ask a question

“Which supplier bills are due in the next 14 days?” — real answer back in ~5 seconds.

Most teams are live in under an hour. No developer required at any step.

Data available

The Xero records your team asks about, in seconds.

Kipper caches your supported Xero records and maps them to a unified schema optimized for fast querying. The operational records teams need become available to your whole company — within the permissions you set. Bank data, reconciliation, cash position, and GL-level reports stay outside the boundary by design.

When Xero's official server is the right choice

You're a developer comfortable with the Xero Developer Portal, Custom Connections, and OAuth scopes, you want free and open source, and you're building or testing on your own machine. It's the official open-source server, maintained by Xero, with a tool surface that depends on the scopes you authorise.

When Kipper is the right choice

A finance team, ops team, or business owner wants AI answers from Xero without a developer in the loop, and read-only access, per-user permissions, and an audit trail are requirements rather than nice-to-haves. One caution about the DIY and raw-server routes: write exposure depends on the scopes you authorise, so a broad rollout can hand an AI conversation the ability to change records.

Skip the developer setup entirely.

Under the hood

Built on a synced copy, not API round-trips.

Xero's API is shaped for product access — per-endpoint calls, pagination, one tenant at a time. Standard requests handle standard questions, but combining records across receivables, payables, and purchasing forces an AI to stitch multiple calls together and do the math itself, which is where wrong answers creep in.

Kipper answers from a synced, change-fed copy of your supported Xero records instead. Cross-record lookups and breakdowns become single queries against complete records, which is why answers come back in about five seconds, with the actual figures.

Security

Read-only by architecture, not by promise.

  • It cannot write. Kipper connects to Xero read-only. Creating, editing, or deleting records through Kipper is architecturally impossible, no matter what the AI is asked.

  • Permissioned at the source. Admins scope access by user, team, or channel. The scope is enforced when the query runs, regardless of how the question is phrased.

  • Everything is logged. Every question and answer lands in the admin portal audit trail.

  • Encrypted, in transit and at rest. Hosted on AWS in the United States, built by the team behind Breadwinner with 12+ years in finance integrations.

FAQ

Xero MCP Connector FAQ

Common questions about connecting AI assistants to Xero through Kipper.

Yes. Xero publishes an official open-source MCP server for developers. It is useful when a technical owner wants direct control over Xero scopes, credentials, local MCP clients, and the tool surface exposed to an assistant.
Yes. Xero has MCP support in two forms: an official open-source Xero MCP server that developers run themselves, and hosted Xero MCP connectors like Kipper that give teams a no-setup, read-only, permissioned route from Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini to supported Xero records.
Developers can configure Xero's official local MCP server in Claude Desktop after setting up Xero Developer credentials and scopes. Teams that do not want local server maintenance can use Kipper as a hosted connector and add the Kipper MCP connection instead.
Yes. Claude can integrate with Xero through MCP. Developers can point Claude Desktop at Xero's official MCP server, or a team can add Kipper's hosted Xero MCP connector to Claude for read-only, permissioned answers with no local server to run.
Yes. Claude works with Xero through the Model Context Protocol. With Kipper's hosted connector, Claude answers plain-English questions from supported Xero records — invoices, bills, payments, purchase orders, contacts, and credit notes — read-only and scoped by the permissions you set.
Yes. Kipper is designed as the hosted route for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini access, with the same read-only Xero connection also powering Slack, Teams, and SMS.
No. Kipper handles the hosted connector path. Your team does not need to register a Xero Developer app, manage Custom Connection secrets, or run a local MCP server on each machine.
Kipper supports Xero contacts, invoices, payments, bills, bill payments, purchase orders, inventory, credit notes, and supplier credits for permissioned team Q&A.
No. Kipper does not read Xero bank transactions, bank balances, reconciliation status, cash position, runway, or burn.
No. Kipper is read-only by architecture. It cannot create invoices, edit contacts, approve bills, post payments, or delete records.
No. An admin connects Xero once, then approved users can ask from their existing work tools according to the permissions you configure in Kipper.
Permissions are checked when each query runs. If a user, team, or channel is not allowed to see a record area, Kipper does not return that data to the AI client.
Kipper keeps a synced copy of supported Xero records updated through Xero change notifications and follow-up syncs. Exact freshness can vary by record type and Xero event timing.
Xero's open-source server is developer tooling with broader scope flexibility. Kipper is the managed, finance-oriented layer for teams that need read-only answers, permissions, logging, and no local MCP infrastructure.
