Xero + Slack

Your team asks in Slack, Kipper answers from Xero

The question lands on whoever has Xero open. Ask in the channel instead and that person gets their afternoon back.

Kipper reads the Xero records your team asks about every day: contacts, invoices, payments, supplier bills, bill payments, purchase orders, inventory, credit notes and supplier credits, plus prepayments and overpayments on both sides. The Xero Trial Balance, P&L and Balance Sheet are available too. Tracking Categories group a total when you want it broken down. Your bank feed stays out of it entirely.

Xero

Kipper connects your Xero organisation to Slack and answers questions about it in plain English. One Xero admin authorises read-only access once, and after that anyone you approve can ask in a channel or a direct message without a Xero login of their own. Kipper never reads bank transactions or account balances, each answer is computed against the asker's own permissions, and every request is logged.

No Xero seat for the people asking

Read-only, so your organisation cannot be edited

Answers respect the asker's own permissions

Unapplied, applied and refunded deposit balances

Two different problems

Most Xero and Slack tools move records between the two apps. This one answers questions about them.

Zapier, Unito and the rest exist to push a Xero event into a channel, or to keep two systems in step with each other. Those flows are built once, so what the channel gets told was settled by whoever built them. Kipper copies nothing and syncs nothing into Slack. Somebody asks a question that was never configured, and it reads Xero and answers.

Sync and alert tools

Zapier, Unito, Zoho Flow, n8n

  • A Xero event fires a message into a channel
  • Or two systems are kept in step with each other
  • Somebody configures it, then maintains it
  • There is nothing there to ask

Kipper

Reads Xero, syncs nothing

  • Somebody asks, Kipper reads Xero and answers
  • Nothing is copied into Slack or kept in step
  • One authorisation and nothing to maintain
  • Every answer respects that person's permissions

What your team can ask

What a Slack channel can ask Xero

Contacts, supplier bills and the deposits nobody can ever remember the balance of.

"Has Fjord Studio paid INV-1904?"

Account manager following up in Slack

"What is still unpaid for Kestrel Freight?"

Ops coordinator checking supplier AP

"How much of the Barrow Lane deposit is still unused?"

Project lead before invoicing the next stage

"Any credit notes on the Harlow Timber account?"

Support agent with a ticket open

"Invoiced total for Tracking Category Studio last quarter?"

Project lead checking their own numbers

"Which purchase orders for Vance Interiors are still open?"

Buyer before placing the next order

"Did we overpay Kestrel Freight on that last bill?"

Office manager checking a supplier query

"What is on hand for item BR-770?"

Warehouse lead on the floor

See it answer a Xero question for real.

Who it's for

Who asks Xero from Slack

Account manager

Check whether a contact has settled their last invoice before picking up the phone to them.

Ops coordinator

List what is still owed to a supplier without opening Xero or asking the bookkeeper.

Office manager

Look at a supplier bill before approving the next purchase from the same contact.

Support agent

Find the credit note raised against a contact while their ticket is still open.

Retail buyer

See which bills from a supplier are outstanding and whether a supplier credit came through for the last returned delivery.

Project lead

Pull invoiced totals for their own Tracking Category without waiting on a report.

Pricing

$5 a month for each extra person who asks

Xero plans start at $200 a month with 10 active users included, then $5 for each additional active user. Billing follows the people who actually ask a question that month, so a quiet month costs less.

  • 2,000 questions a month included
  • Free 14-day trial with 100 questions
  • No credit card required to start
  • Month to month, no long-term commitment

How it works

How to connect Xero to Slack

One authorisation against the Xero organisation you choose, then Slack. No Xero developer app, no API keys, no automation platform in between.

01

Authorise Xero

In the Kipper portal, open Data Sources and choose Xero. You are sent to Xero's own login, where you pick which organisation to connect and grant read-only access to it.

02

Add Slack as an interface

Back in the portal, open Interfaces, add Slack for Xero, and let a Slack workspace admin approve it. That happens once for the workspace.

03

Decide who sees what

Give each person a permission set. Their Kipper email needs to match their Slack email, which is how an answer gets scoped to the right person rather than the room.

04

Ask in the channel

Message Kipper directly with no mention needed, or type @Kipper in a channel. Carry on in the thread and the context carries with it.

We'll do the setup with you.

A 30-minute session: connect Xero, add Slack, and set who can see what. Free, no commitment.

Straight answer

What Kipper will not do

Worth knowing before you book a call, so nothing here is a surprise later.

Read bank transactions, bank balances or reconciliation status. Kipper is never connected to your bank feed.

Tell you a cash position, runway or burn rate, since all of those come from bank data.

Make a claim about multi-currency positions or revalued balances.

Return a Cash Flow statement or VAT return.

Write a single character back to Xero.

Post anything into a channel unless somebody asked for it.

How Kipper handles access

Read-only. Permissioned. Logged.

  • Kipper never creates, updates, or deletes Xero records.
  • You choose what each user or team can see.
  • Every question is written to an audit log.
  • Pricing is the same on every interface. See plans.

FAQ

Xero in Slack

The bank-data question, deposits, contacts and Tracking Categories.

No, and this is the one worth being clear about. Kipper does not read bank transactions, bank account balances or reconciliation status, and it is not connected to your bank feed at all. It answers from invoices, bills, payments, contacts, purchase orders, inventory, credit notes and prepayments, plus the Xero Trial Balance, P&L and Balance Sheet.
Correct. Cash position, runway and burn rate are all derived from bank data, so they are outside what Kipper reads on Xero. What it can tell you is what is owed to you, what you owe, and what has already been paid.
Yes, and this is something Xero handles particularly well. Prepayments and overpayments are tracked on both the customer and the supplier side, and Kipper reads how much is still unapplied, how much has been used against an invoice or a bill, and how much was refunded.
No. Xero uses one contact record for customers and suppliers alike, and Kipper queries those contact records directly. Ask about a contact by name and it does not matter which side of the ledger they sit on.
They are Xero's own grouping field, so you can ask for an invoiced total broken down by category. Industry or sector are not real fields in Xero, so they cannot be used the same way.
The one you pick during authorisation. You are sent to Xero's own login, choose the organisation there, and that is the organisation Kipper reads from.
Xero sends Kipper a change notification and the affected records are pulled within seconds. Kipper also polls Xero every 15 minutes as a backstop, so nothing is lost if a notification is delayed.
No. One Xero admin authorises the organisation once. Everyone else only ever needs Slack and a Kipper permission set.
Yes. Ask by invoice number and Kipper returns a download link in the same thread for the document Xero generated. It is one invoice at a time, the link is single-purpose and expires a few minutes after it is made, and permission is checked again at the moment of download rather than only when you asked.
